The community of Asha Kiran, Gangavathi was started at the request of the then Bishop Rt. Rev. Ambrose P. Yeddanapalli O. F. M., by the Province of Mangalore when Sr. Raphael Gomes was the Provincial superior. The main purpose of opening this community was to cater to the need of reaching out to people through the evangelical and catechetical apostolate in that Parish. Sr. Raphael responded to the need by sending 4 sisters. They, along with the help of the then parish priest Fr. Thomas D’souza, began the apostolate to reach out to the spiritual, mental, emotional, physical and educational needs of the people of the place. The presence of the sisters brought about new vigor, enthusiasm and awareness among the people they started to realize the evils of alcoholism, dowry system, child marriages, child-labour. They started to educate their children, came to realize the evils of superstitious practices and began to understand that illness is curable and started making use of the health facilities. The sisters inculcated in them a right knowledge of ethical values and social living. The introduction to self –help groups in order to get rid of bonded labor and also to know the value of savings, the sisters actively got involved in the general social problems that were prevalent in the area and started to work for the people and with them.
Today many self-help groups are formed with local leaders like Mahila groups which is very active here, people have realized the need for education, women are given training in handicraft and stitching - provided with sewing machines in order that they may earn their livelihood and stand on their own feet even if their drunken husbands trouble them.
Besides, the sisters gave health services through mobile clinics, and later provided with admission facilities too, in case of need. Health services not only catered for the cure of illness only, but also attended to prevention of illness, awareness on diseases, its causes and control. Free medical services were also rendered for the most needy people
As the area progressed in civilization, the community of Sisters opened a boarding school for children from the poor families. The Education of the poor children in parish schools is also undertaken.
Today through all these services, some of which are suppressed as the need is reduced, our sisters continue their selfless service in reaching out to the poor of the area.
